So we were invited to attend Wardroblings last Friday as part of the
Press (Sort of. We were categorized under "prominent
bloggers"/"influential fashion enthusiasts" in the invite. Hahaha).
Very exciting stuff for us, it's the first time in our lives that we
were invited for an event as, well, bloggers. Cool beans, we thought,
we'd love to attend :)
Key look from Loko Yu. Loved the bright pop of colour and the detailing with plastic pockets and cutesy accessories. I can so see Agyness Deyn wandering around Brooklyn in these!!
And
I must say, D and I had a fabulous time. The wonderful girls over at
TFF (The Fashion Fraternity) really pulled off a spectacular show! I'm
so impressed with the way they managed to put the event together -
they're incredibly resourceful (good people to keep in mind the next
time you wanna do a fashionyy related event). Complimentary champagne,
free flow all night, special press&photo passes (we looked like
fools requesting for a photopass for our puny point&shoot cameras,
when everyone else was there with their massive SLRs and huuuge lenses
looking all professional and shiz), jumping queues, and the best seats
in the house for the show!
Nat&Nat
sizzling in Goh Seng Henk & Nabil Aliffi's fantastic takes on
everyone's all time favourite: The Little Black Dress.
Wardroblings
featured some of Singapore's more notable budding designers. Their
collections incorporated current trends and brought to them a fresh
perspective. The event really allowed these talented young individuals
to make a grand entrance onto the Singapore fashion scene.
Xian Lee's super slick tailored pieces with pleats and folds in the most unpredictable places!
Personally,
I think it's fantastic that there's so much support here for budding
designers. It's so important to be given opportunities to showcase your
work when you're new to the scene and have so much passion for your
work (rather than later in life when you're disgruntled and old and
disillusioned). People are always talking about the "going local"
movement (i.e. buying from your local grocer instead of huge
corporations like Stop&Shop), and I don't see why
fashion&designers shouldn't be included in the mix. Think about it,
Dana and Anna of Foley&Corinna (I LOVE!), met and started selling
their wares at their local flea market and grew to fame from there!!
My
favourite look for the night was this wonderfully pleated piece by Max
Tan! I love the stiff collar on the shirt and its sharp tailoring in
contrast to the billowy pleated pants which also have a "collar" at the
waist. Really really fantastic. Move over Junya you have some new
competition in town!
And the fact that Singaporeans are
increasingly aware of personal grooming and have a desire to so-called
"look better" really helps with the growth of that fashion niche.
People are more willing to invest in their appearance (and it's not
just in fashion! More and more people get their nails done regularly,
go for facials, spend more money on their hair, etc..). So I guess it's
good that these designers are tapping on the market while it's young.
Max
Tan's full collection for the night, I love the fluidity in all his
pieces! (that's him trailing behind - kind of reminds me of Alber Elbaz
who doesn't look like he should be in the fashion industry but is a
definite force in the fashion world - who knows? Max Tan might be the
next big thing)
Singaporeans are also increasingly
sophisticated when it comes to their taste and desires, and are looking
to alternative labels to differentiate themselves from the crowd! No
one wants to be caught wearing the same thing as everyone else. They're
more adventurous in their choice of clothing and they're more open to
brands outside the usual designer box of gucci prada LV. It's the
perfect space for these young designers to fill with their creative new
takes on old favourites and adventurous new pieces.
Hot
on the heels of the Doc Marten trend. Erin Wasson would approve. Love
the unexpected colour (poison ivy green!) and the slightly patent shine
on this pair.
Maybe the next time you consider splurging on a
new key item for your wardrobe, don't rule out Singapore designers, I
really think they have something special to offer, especially if (like
me) you're bored of mass market retail.
And
because she really looked like the belle of the ball, let's take one
last look at Nat in that beautiful Christmas ornament confection (I
mean this in a good way!). It's just so perfect, structured but sweet!
With it's bell-ed shape (ala Balenciaga SS08!) wonderfully rounded like
a little bobble, in all it's glittery goodness. LOVES IT! Does anyone
know where I can BUY IT!?!!!
And on that note, if you'd like to know more about the designers, head to Wardroblings Facebook event page for a run down and some quick links.
